Enchanted Makeovers

Today I donated a 40 lb. box full of handcrafted Savannah Moon scented soaps to Enchanted Makeovers, based in the Detroit, MI area. Terry Grahl founded this wonderful non-profit organization that has helped women's & children's shelters nation wide. They do a fabulous job of doing beautiful interior makeovers at the shelters, along with organizing events to help uplift the spirits of the women & children that are there.

The soaps will be used in "Makeover Day" gift bags. They will be given to the young women at Alternative for Girls shelter in Detroit, MI, a shelter that Enchanted Makeovers has been working with this year. I hope the young ladies enjoy this addition to their much needed day of pampering!

Just Relax…

The negative effects that stress has on the body are far too numerous to list, from depression to heart disease and everything in between. When our systems are running at 110% for too long we literally burnout and end up feeling terrible. If we keep up this pace and don’t listen to the signs our body is telling us we can then be faced with big health issues.

Relaxation on the other hand has more positive effects on our system then I can list. From lower blood pressure to sleeping better at night, along with a quiet and peaceful mind and a sense of well-being, the benefits are endless. There are many natural ways to help relax your body, mind and soul. Through taking a walk in nature, sitting quietly in a room, yoga and meditation or massage therapy are all wonderful ways to help you unwind.

Aromatherapy is another fabulous means of relaxation. When we incorporate plants and essential oils that are known to have relaxing qualities into our daily lives all of the stress of the day seems to melt away. My favorites are Lavender, Chamomile and Peppermint.

Most everyone is familiar with the relaxing qualities of Lavender, including helping to alleviate headaches and migraines, insomnia, anxiety and tension. Lavender is also soothing to all skin types, and the list just keeps going.

Chamomile has an amazing list of benefits too. It is know to help with all types of skin conditions and has an anti-inflammatory effect. It relaxes the mind and body when stressed, anxious or depressed. It gives patience and peace, also helping when you can’t fall asleep and the list goes on.

Then we come to my other favorite. Peppermint is also helpful at alleviating headaches and migraines. What most people don’t know about Peppermint is that it helps to balance the sympathetic nervous system, this is our fight or flight response. When our body experiences this at an ongoing pace we burnout our adrenal glands and are always tired and drained. Peppermint is known to calm mental racing and to help with depression. This is just a touch of what Peppermint has to offer and when you combine it with Lavender it is just fabulous!

I'm Martha Stewart's Doer of the Week ~ Now I am Dreaming!

Yesterday was a day unlike any other! My parents had planned a family outing to Cedar Point Amusement Park, who would have thought it would fall on the same day that I was announced as Martha Stewart's Doer of the Week? We had a great time, but I had no access to the internet while I was there. Once I got home at 12:30am I was so delighted to see the Dreamers into Doers newsletter with the nice article that Alexis had written about me, along with all of the lovely comments from my friends and new subscribers to my email updates! Then, to top it off, when I checked my mail... There was a large envelope from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, I had received my official "Certificate of Registration" for Savannah Moon! What an awesome day!

When I tell my friends and family about this site I keep catching myself referring to it as "Doers into Dreamers". I came to realize it must be because I started out "Doing" and then the "Dream" evolved. And believe me... To be recognized by Martha Stewart as the "Doer of the Week", I feel like I am dreaming!

It was so wonderful to actually hear Alexis' voice on the phone when she called me with the great news. It was really nice to share more about myself and Savannah Moon with her.

I so truly enjoy this site and all of the wonderful opportunities it has provided. To connect with so many incredibly talented and professional people is just amazing. I love sharing with all of you and learning about your passions. You inspire and energize me! THANK YOU!

Gems in the Sand

Yesterday I took the day off and enjoyed some time with my family at the Mentor Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve and Beach on Lake Erie, Ohio. Even on a Sunday I had a full day of work scheduled, but I decided to take my husband's offer and go with him and Savannah for a nice ride and to do some beach combing.

I really don't enjoy being in the water, or just laying on the beach. I enjoy about a two to three foot strip of sand right along the water's edge with the waves splashing on my ankles. This is my favorite place to be, right along the lake! I love finding the little sparkling treasures of sea glass, even the smallest of pieces make it into my collection. As I walk along I am always fascinated to see that each passing wave reveals something new, and when I see a sparkling gem in the sand I reach for it.

Equally amazing is just how fast the next wave can come along and take that treasure from you, just as fast as the last one revealed it. Such is life, when we are presented with an opportunity we need to reach out and grab it, or we may lose that chance and will never know what gem it could have revealed to us. Don't let life pass you by, reach out for those gems that present themselves to you. You may end up with a treasure!

About Giving Back

Being in business is not only about selling your product or service for profit, it is also about giving back to your community.

Over the years Savannah Moon has donated gift baskets to local charities for fundraising raffles. We are members of Downtown Wadsworth, Inc. - a community group geared to the promotion and preservation of our historic downtown area where our studio is located. We support our local downtown merchants and they save their packing materials from their shipments that stock their stores for us. We in turn recycle them in the shipments of our orders that we send out. Every time we get the chance we promote the local stores that carry our products to help bring shoppers in for a look around.

We attend local shows and give talks to help educate people on the benefits of using natural products. I had the opportunity to speak at a regional meeting for the International Association of Culinary Professionals, hosted by Chef Bev Schaffer. Chef Bev heads the cooking school at the Mustard Seed Market & Cafe and wanted to highlight the qualities that make her cooking school unique; natural and organic with an emphasis on local. My topic was "How natural skin care and cooking go hand in hand". We use a lot of the same ingredients and methods that chefs use in cooking to make our products. It was wonderful to open the eyes of people that never gave natural skin care a second thought and to be able to relate it to something they know!

Along the way I have found myself giving gifts of Savannah Moon Relaxation Products to my neighbors when I hear they have had a hospital stay or have lost a loved one. To the school crossing guard when I found he was going for surgery for cancer. To teachers to help them relax after a long school year. To someone who unexpectedly stopped by to plow my driveway! He was stopped at the light in front of my house as I was trying to shovel out the end of my drive. I needed to get it cleared so my husband could get in during the biggest Ohio blizzard of the year. He backed up his truck and started to plow. When he was done he wouldn't accept any money, although I would have been happy to pay him for his help. So, I offered him a big bag full of Savannah Moon Soap Bars as a thank you. His wife in the passenger seat gladly accepted them! Shortly after they left, they came back and plowed my neighbor's drive too... I guess they liked the soaps! :o)

Sometimes it's the little things that count... Like putting a smile on someone's face. Giving a gift of your time, product or service that touches someone's heart and soul. That is truly giving back to your community. As Savannah Moon continues to grow we will always look for more opportunities to give back.

Savannah Moon, How it all Began

Just last week I joined Martha Stewart's Dreamers into Doers social networking site. It is a wonderful place for like-mined women to share their stories of success and of their dreams that they would like to turn into realities. I shared a condensed version of my story with everyone on that site and thought I would share it with you also.

More than twelve years ago I started to make natural handcrafted products for my personal use and to give as gifts. In the spring of 2004, with only 3 products, my husband suggested that I do the Wadsworth Herb & Craft Fair. That was the official start of Savannah Moon as a company. It's come a long way in 5 years! We now offer 28 products in many different scents.

We have just recently moved into our new Soap Studio, an 1870's New York style loft in Downtown Wadsworth, Ohio. We are members of Downtown Wadsworth, Inc. which is a community group geared to the preservation of our historic downtown area. All of our packing materials are recycled from our downtown area business from their shipments that stock their stores. We also offer fundraising opportunities for non-profit organizations.

If it weren't for all of our wonderful customers we would have no story to share.

The Green Dream Showcase

Yesterday, Savannah Moon was a proud participant of The Green Dream Showcase. This was a fabulous Eco-Friendly show that was put on by the Beachwood High School Junior Achievement Class and held at the Beachwood Community Center. It showcased over 70 local Ohio Eco-Friendly businesses with a wealth of information on product and service offerings.

The proceeds from the 2008 Green Dream Showcase was used to fund their “Ultimate Green Classroom”. Working with Doty and Miller Architects, a leading Green architectural firm in Ohio, they have successfully designed the national model for eco-classrooms. With the proceeds from yesterday's 2009 showcase, the class will insert solar panels and an outdoor learning environment to their ultimate green classroom.

Savannah Moon was contacted and asked to attend by one of the Junior Achievement students after she had seen the article that was written about us this January in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The show turned out to be a wonderful opportunity for us to meet and connect with other like-minded people of our local community.

I think the show was a great success for the students, the businesses and for all of the community that were able to attend. The Beachwood High School Junior Achievement Class along with the help of their fabulous teachers and assistants put on the best show that Savannah Moon has ever been a part of. The professionalism shown by all of the students was wonderful! They all definitely have a bright future ahead of them. The show was very well organized and displayed, promoted and attended. We would be happy to be part of next years showcase!

I'm so happy that it worked out for you! Most of our products are offered in Moonbeam (unscented/fragrance free). If the Skin Cream worked out for you, you should be OK with the rest of our Moonbeam products. Just click on the drop down scent menu to see if the product is available in Moonbeam. Did you also use the Body Oil I sent? The oils in the Body Oil are all in the Skin Cream. Savannah Moon in the Cleveland Plain Dealer

Yesterday January 21, 2009 Savannah Moon was featured in an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer! I didn't know that this was going to be in the paper, it was by chance that I found it online to even know to check the paper! The article was written by Kim Crow of the Plain Dealer Style staff. Several weeks ago Kim had written an article More Suggestions for Skin-Friendly Stuff. The main focus seemed to be on unscented, fragrance free products, which Savannah Moon definitely carries. I actually thought that I missed my chance at being part of this article, but I emailed Kim and introduced myself and Savannah Moon anyway. I also introduced myself and Savannah Moon on the Blog attached to the online article. I didn't hear back from Kim and just assumed she had moved on to a different subject.

Yesterday morning when I checked my site I saw that it was viewed from a link at www.Cleveland.com, which happens to be the Cleveland Plain Dealer website. I just thought someone saw my blog post and linked on from there. So, I went to their site and typed in Savannah Moon in the search and clicked on the first thing that popped up. I looked at it, expecting to see the blog posts, but it wasn't. I thought it linked to the wrong thing, then it hit me! She wrote an article about Savannah Moon! At first I thought it was just posted online, then I saw yesterdays date... I ran down stairs tore open the bag that held the paper, found the Style & Taste section and there it was! Kim wrote the article for the actual paper, which also happens to be online!

In the evening I went out to pick up a few extra papers. When I couldn't find any, they were all sold out here, it hit me that my Savannah Moon article just happened to run in the same paper as the President Obama's Inauguration! How cool is that! Luckily my husband found some papers on his way home, so I now have eight copies of this historic edition of the Cleveland Plain Dealer!

I emailed Kim and thanked her. I offered to send her some products as a thank you for running the article. She kindly emailed back and said that she was not allowed to accept gifts of any kind. That was really nice to know, it gives their reporting credibility, that they can't be bought!
